Detroit

Well, so far my trip to Detroit has been good.  The first day, me and my partner, Sean, miserably failed a Microsoft Office contest.  We couldn’t get past the first question which involved linking data from an Excel file to a Word file, then using the newly created tables in word in an Access database.  3 hours of staring at a screen, not getting it.  Google wouldn’t tell us how to do it, so we finally gave up, only to find out that EVERY other group from our school also could not get past the starting point.  After we found that out, our frustration disappeared and our acceptance that we just had not been taught how to do it sunk in.

Yesterday I took the preliminary test against 140+ other people in the PC Troubleshooting contest, and I qualified for the finals today.  One of 10 people who qualified.  yay.

Now I’m about to head in and do the finals, which involves fixing a broken computer.  Hah, I could do that in my sleep.  I so gonna win that $500 prize.

School

Amazing, I don’t know how, but I guess I’m a respectable student in my major. First there’s the whole business of getting to go to Detroit this Weekend to compete, and now there’s the fact that I will be graduating this Summer rather than this December.  The head of my department (CIS) agreed to teach me an independent study course this summer I semester, and I’m taking my last two classes in Summer II.  Amazing.

I guess I’ll postpone the job hunting for a few more months and just focus on school 100%

I can’t believe I’m this close to finishing.

Funtime

This weekend I’m going to detroit for a conference/contest hosted by my department at the school.  Pretty exciting stuff.  I get to compete in the PC Troubleshooting contest, so hopefully I do well.  If I do the best, then my schooling for the summer will be paid for, woo!

Do you know anyone who’s looking for someone to work fulltime starting this June?  Because I know someone who will need a job at that time (me).

pictures on flickr

don’t we always forget how fat we are (me) until people take pictures of me and put them up on flickr.

I’m setting my google calendar to remind me daily that I am fat.

sxsw

Where do I start? I’m currently uploading my pictures from sxsw to my flickr account

I’ll go ahead and list out the bands that I saw, then say a little something about the highlights:

Apes and Androids – By far, these guys were the best act that I saw. They came prepared, all dressed in Ziggy Stardust makeup, and the keyboardist was in a blue jumpsuit. They were so good that I saw them twice. This band is a great upgrade from Call Florence Pow.

Mew – Put on a great show. It was one of my only 5:00 shows, so I got to see them play for an hour.

The Hush Sound – Suprisingly good

Apostle of Hustle – funky band and the lead singer was dressed like a smooth criminal

Menomena – Awesome, got to see them twice, loved every minute of it!

Peter Bjorn and John – The only show that I waited in line for. Josh and I walked from C and K’s house to Waterloo records (~2 miles) to see them, and waited 30 minutes in line. Put on a great show, lots of jumping around and generally was a happy show.

Spankrock – I don’t remember them, but I think I saw them twice. Both times it was past 1am

Ra Ra Riot – I caught them sitting outside the venue with Josh while people setup a big, way out of place, St Patricks Day tent. The music was awesome.

Division Day – This was off the beaten path at Cream Vintage so there weren’t a ton of people at the show. I was front and center with about 5 feet behind me of no people. I was just about the whole audience. It was great, and they played with great energy

Birdmonster – Holy crap, they were the liveliest band of all the bands that I saw. Jumping around, always moving. If you look at my pictures of them on flicker, you’ll notice that nearly every picture, a band member is blurry from moving too much

Flatstock – Not a band, just an AWESOME display of art. I talked with a lot of the artists, and they are all soo nice.

The Good the Bad and the Queen – Honestly, Damon Albarn is a genius, but I kinda got sleepy watching them play, so I skipped out after two songs to go catch another act (Menomena for the second time I believe)

Listened to the new Queens of the Stone Age album – Listened to the album presented by MS Zune, and got free breakfast, a hoodie, two shirts, and countless other things. So I just listed all the good things. Oh, the album, is just standard fare for QOTSA.

How I became the Bomb – These guys were great, and were one of the only acts that I paid to see. Good stage presence. At the MTSU Alumni party, I probably ran into them and probably did something silly in front of them.

As for the spending and stuff. I paid a total of $15 to get into shows. I went to a crazy party the first night at an art gallery. I think it was invite only, but that doesn’t stop someone from just walking in and acting like they own the place. I met some cool people at the art show, Madrid introduced me to

Oh, I also figured something out the first day. I was standing outside a spot that hadn’t quite opened yet, and noticed a lady walk up with a bag of ice and just walked right past all the security. I’m pretty sure that’s the most brilliant idea ever, and if it works out for me next year. I will gladly pay 99 cents each time that I want to get into a concert. Until Ice becomes banned from shows.

The second night, I went to a party a few blocks from C and K’s house that was thrown by Nasa, and Windows Vista. I had a really great time. Though I think I was hitting on a girl the whole time with her boyfriend standing right beside her. Someone asked me, and my reasoning behind it was “if you somehow can make the guy think that you are homosexual, then he won’t notice you stealing his girl” The funny thing is, the next day, I ran into them again they were really cool. I wish I had found out their name, since I also figured out 5 minutes later that I stood in line in front of him to see that taping of ACL back in September. I also remember his girlfriend being on crutches. The only clue I have is their names are Eric and Anna. I’m gonna try and track em down.

Night 3, I went to a diesel jeans/nylon house party that was thrown at my new friend Kevin’s office building. The only reason I went was to see Sondre Lerche, but Leanne, Mark and me didn’t get there in time to see him. So I grabbed a free shirt and some CDs and left. I wish I had known that there were free shoes, I would have gotten one. After this, I went to the real Diesel Showcase, and saw Tokyo Police Club and Girl Talk put on respective shows.

Night 4, I paid 5 dollars to get into Friend’s Bar, and saw Human Giant (comedy troupe), and then I saw Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job! Live tour.

OK, that’s everything I did for the most part. I am sure I missed some stuff, but whatever. Just know, that I had a really good time, got a TON of free stuff, and hung out with a bunch of friends I get to see once a year.

Mental Blog

I wish I had an implant in my brain so I could just make posts about what I’m thinking.

I’m jealous of those people who constantly think “hey, I need to post this”

I always forget to post things, or I think them, then forget about them before posting them.

Tomorrow (technically today) is Sunday, don’t forget to set your clocks ahead an hour.

This year is the best Daylight Savings Time year ever. We get to ease ourselves into the change with a week off of school.

School, why am I still in school? It’s been nearly 9 years now since I got out of high school. There are people I graduated with who have 2+ kids, are married, own homes, are fully vested in the companies they work for and all those other things.

I’m still a kid, I look like a chubby little kid. I think I’ll perpetually be a student and look like a kid for the rest of my life.

sxsw is this week though, so at least the awesomeness of that is going on.

Oh yeah, I was looking through my closet for things to sell on ebay and I found a computer game that I bought at goodwill sometime last year just because it looked like it might be worth something. It was some world war 2 flight simulator called Their Finest Hour – The Battle of Britain. The game was made back in 1991 and I found it for $2. I have it up on ebay right now, along with a ton of dunny’s. Check out my ebay store

Got an email yesterday at about 4pm from one of my teachers reminding us that he just put some homework up on blackboard (website for assignments and stuff) that’s due after the break. Yeah, thanks for that.

I need more junk to sell on ebay. Anyone know of anything I can buy cheap and sell for a lot on the internet? It seems to be a lucrative position still, if done right.

I bought a shoe rack at Ikea and now I’m charging up the battery on my digital camera for a few minutes so I can take a picture of it. It’s my monitor stand, cost $9.99, and is pretty much awesome. the official monitor stand for my desk is discontinued and when they sold it, it cost about $20, and only held one monitor. weak

My Desktop

As much as I hate The Gap and Old Navy, I can’t really help but buy pants at old navy when I see them on sale. Good pants are so hard to find, and by good pants, I mean 34×30. Old navy always has size 34×30 pants when I go in there. And they are always some ridiculous price like $7.

Well, it’s either 1:20 or 2:20, however you look at it, it’s time that I’m gonna just get into bed.
